Not all projects start with a clear brief, or a ready-made solution. Here we investigated a range of options to solve a list of requirements, including more space, more functionality, additional bedrooms, improved insulation, and a better connection to the garden. We discussed a range of options including a large rear extension, and how the proposals could be phased without doubling-up activities. Part of this exploration of strategy included […]

Our clients here were seasoned developers, having built their current house 200m above the site, and previously redeveloped a large house on the same plot. Here they set out to convert old buildings which had had several previous uses, including apple stores and furniture workshops and sales rooms. Wit the client we set out to be as ecologically sound as possible. Having reverted to a refurbishment project after an initial investigation of a […]

25 Gilpin Close

Services provided: design and tendering
Completion: due late 2025

Our client here had many ideas as to what they wanted to achieve, and some ideas of how, but needed to pull all the strands together as well as carry out a sense-check on costs. So we started with a strategic review of all the options, including introducing new ideas into the pot. We looked at remodelling the first floor with new bathrooms and an extension over the garage; moving the stairs, […]

9 Parkfield Way

Services provided: post-Planning services
Completion: December 2023

This is an example of a project which we inherited from other designers. We have taken this role several times; it occurs for various reasons, from other practices folding, or not wanting to carry out technical design, for instance. Picking up a project that someone else has commenced brings its own challenges which we manage as sensitively as possible.

In this instance we reviewed the original proposals, responding to client change requests, technical […]

Completion: December 2015

A pair of extensions on a pair of semi-detached 1930s houses in Heavitree, we were commissioned to extend no. 17 and when the owners bought the adjacent property for their family, to extend that too. The construction took place under one contract, and although the design-brief for the two parts were different, sharing common detailing and roof profiles brought efficiency and elegance.

Despite being similar, the projects required different planning routes, too: one […]

We were commissioned to remodel, refurbish and extend this little coach-house style property that was a subservient wing of a larger villa in Heavitree. The existing small flat had damp issues, was dark, had no ground floor facilities, and made no real use of the sunny little courtyard. We have rationalised and improved the plan to provide a light-filled family room overlooking the courtyard as well as made improvements to the first floor […]

Westerlea is a new SIPS-frame house built on the footprint of a failing bungalow on a site overlooking West Hill. fairview architecture has taken on the project whose broad design had been completed previously; we conducted a thorough technical review and re-tendered the works before commencement on site in 2011.

The new house maximises its elevated aspect on the site with long views from the principal rooms, whilst minimising its impact […]

53 Langaton Lane

Services provided: full architectural design services to completion
Completion: February 2012

Careful consideration of the structural insertions has led to achieving a spacious bedroom with en-suite and walk-in wardrobe, whilst still retaining some loft storage space, in this project which required the almost complete re-construction of the original roof.

Converting the hipped roof to a gable and providing a rear box dormer gives generous headroom, whilst the staircase, which is always a key element to a successful loft conversion, has been […]

Our brief here was to open up the cellular plan of a solid 1930’s semi-detached house into a flexible open-plan living space. An internal spine wall and most of the rear wall of the house have been removed without affecting the two storeys above. We have added an extension whose wide folding doors open directly onto the garden and with rooflights bring light deep into the combined living/dining/kitchen space.

Underfloor heating […]
